Vessel blockage in the Suez Canal

Dear Customer,

As you will have undoubtably heard in the news, a container ship (the Ever Given) operated by Evergreen Marine ran aground and became lodged sideways across the waterway due to strong winds and sandstorms early Tuesday March 23.

While efforts continue to dislodge the vessel, we are receiving word this morning that good progress was made overnight.

After several days of dredging and excavation, we are being advised that the vessel has been refloated.

The Suez Canal Authority (SCA) site is further advising that maneuvers are set to be resumed during high tide at 11:30 am.  It is expecting to achieve full restoration of the vessel’s direction, so it is positioned in the middle of the navigable waterway.

The SCA has reassured the international community that navigation of the canal shall be resumed immediately upon the complete restoration of the vessel’s direction.

However, even when the canal gets reopened, the ripple effects on global capacity and equipment are significant and the blockage has already triggered a series of further disruptions and backlogs in global shipping that could take weeks, possibly months, to unravel.

Reports received this weekend indicated that hundreds of ships are now caught up in the traffic snarl in both directions.

We are closely following the refloating efforts and will advise as soon as we have further information available.

In the interim, we are working with our partners for provision of a listing of affected booking.

Reporting on the same will be provided in due course once further information is secured from the lines.

Sincerely,

HENSALL GLOBAL LOGISTICS
