Industry Update

Dear Customer,

As you are aware, we are currently facing unprecedented challenges within the global ocean container freight market.

On-time performance has significantly deteriorated on many of the major trade lanes.

At the same time, cargo volumes have risen as shippers / consignees work to recover volumes lost during the Covid19 related shutdowns.

Extreme weather conditions in many regions of the world have and continue to impact rail and vessel performance.

As a result of the vessel disruption, we continue to see widespread equipment shortages and are also seeing the implementation of Peak Season and Emergency Surcharges on lanes not generally exposed to the same.

Adding to our challenges in the Canadian market specifically is the looming threat of strike action at the Port of Montreal.

While the Montreal Port Authority has advised that it continues to hope that the dockworkers' union CUPE 375 and the Maritime Employers Association (MEA) will reach an agreement to avoid a new work stoppage, we are seeing CN Rail implement strategic restrictions in an effort to protect the integrity of the supply chain.

As of March 11th, CN has adjusted capacity to control the in gating of Montreal destined export traffic at origin ramps across the country.

It is expected that we may see similar measures from CP Rail in the near future.

While we are doing our utmost to reduce the impact of these challenges to your business, our efforts are unfortunately impacted by factors beyond our control. There may be additional expenses applicable that cannot be avoided and which in turn must be charged to the account of the cargo.

We will continue to be diligent in our communication of such charges and will continue to endeavour to provide market updates as they are announced to the industry.

We wish to caution that disruption to the supply chain and to your cargo planning should be expected.  It is recommended that additional transit time be built into your shipment scheduling to account for expected delays within the pipeline.

Our Hensall Global team is here to support our customers and are available to answer any questions that you may have.

Please be sure to reach out to your Hensall Global representatives at any time.

Sincerely,
